"GHETTO FIREFIGHTER" by Harry Ahearn

When Harry Ahearn’s Ghetto Firefighter was first published nearly thirty years ago, it quickly became one of the most popular books ever published about the New York City Fire Department. After all, fighting fires in New York was unlike fighting fires anywhere else on earth – and fighting fires in Harlem was unlike fighting fires anywhere else in New York City.

Ahearn created a compelling, dedicated, and at times outrageously funny cast of characters and placed them in one of the most physically and socially complex environments imaginable – Harlem – a world of decaying tenements, ferocious fires, dying dreams, and lost lives. All of the unique personalities in and around the fabled Fire Factory were subjected to Harry Ahearn’s creative, careful and compassionate scrutiny. Fire professionals and fire buffs across the United States loved the result – Ghetto Firefighter, a perceptive and truthful salute to an extraordinarily courageous profession. Along with Dennis Smith’s Report from Engine Company 82 and Leo Stapleton’s Thirty Years on the Line, Harry Ahearn’s Ghetto Firefighter became part of the foundation of the literature of “the job.”

DMC books is very proud to make Ghetto Firefighter available again in this completely redesigned reprint edition. If you’ve heard Ghetto Firefighter was a great book…well, it still is!

NOTE: Books are non-refundable.
