WHEN THE BRONX BURNED
by John Finucane

When the Bronx Burned was written by John Finucane, who is a retired lieutenant with the New York City Fire Department. In his book, Lieutenant Finucane tells the fascinating story of the burning of the Charlotte Street area of New York’s South Bronx during the late 1960s and 70s; an era when arson-for-profit drove hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. It’s an intriguing story that shows a New York that most people are completely unfamiliar with.

The premise allows for a great deal of conflict and action, for the heroes aren't just fighting flames, they are fighting a brutal gang of arsonists, the slumlords that employ them, and the political machine that permits the scheme to take place.

“Finucane’s novel is a true-to-life depiction of what it was like during the ‘War Days’ in the South Bronx... brings back the memories of what it was like battling those tough all-hands fires on Charlotte Street. Bravo, John Finucane, for a job well done.”
Bob Farrell

"A most incredible book, written by a veteran firefighter who lived through the hell of "When the Bronx Burned," and had the courage and passion to write about it".
Battalion Chief John Kouba
Captain of Ladder 59 (1973-1976)

“The great story of firefighting in the Bronx during the 1960’s and 70’s just got better. An entertaining book written for everyone—not just firefighters. ”
